Morning/Night – Lake Front Area Of Wanaka

Morning

The golden sun peaks over the sharp ridged mountains, as the birds begin to chirp. The lake glistening , as still as the trees on a warm summers day. Shops begin to open. The smell of fresh coffee being poured into cups fills the street with a delightful scent. Cars begin to fill the streets. Families gather around, with the light giggles of small children’s laughter in the background. Small ducklings following behind their mum. Picnic tables get filled, as people gather. Small pebbles fill the ground, and surroundings elsewhere. Tourists gather round the wharf only to see the slimy, sceptical eels with no place to be. Bikers zoom over the speed bumps, racing to get the much well deserved and wanted gelato. Rapidly, the playground started filling up with children running, screaming and jumping around the place like animals being freed from a cage. The brilliance of the gleaming sun reflects off the double glazed windows in the cafe from the across the bumpy roads. Road workers, laying down new lines on the road trying to fix things up for the people around them. The smell of fresh bakeries opening, fills the air with a pleasant smell for all locals pondering around. Families walk around the shops squeezing to get first look at the new collection shoes, just brought in. The light, warm breeze pushes the crippled leaves off and over onto the ground, smashing against the warm, crisp concrete heated by the radiant sun beams from above. Smooth clouds above, providing shade for all. Customers begin crowding into the jam packed shops. The skatepark over crowds with skaters scooping in and back out of the bowl. Ice creams melting in the sun, dripping onto the sizzling hot path as children tip toe by. Tourists out on the lake in the rental kayaks. Kids screaming, as they feed the scavenging eels. The sun rays glowing on our skin. The rubbish being picked up by the kind souls. Paddle boards fill the lake with a sense of calmness here in Wanaka.

Night Time

The Moon slowly pushes up into the sky, as the sun goes to sleep. The dark sky covers the town with a warm blanket ready to put it to bed for night. Children, asleep, tucked into bed waiting only for the tooth fairy to pop some money under their soft, waffles pillows. Birds, nestled up in their nests laying down. The stars appear amongst the light layer of clouds. Street lights peer onto the mildly warm ground. Nothing but the sound of blasting music fills the air. Mountains with fresh crisp feel to it infuse the air. The distant noise of drunk people down at the bars in town. Faint music playing. The lonely tree’s standing by themselves with no one around, meaning no shade needed. No children to climb up the still tree’s or play with. The light breeze swirls the air. Dogs sneaking out, excited. Bars start to fill with large crowds. Drinks being poured into large pints. Friends gather together, and meet in large groups. The loud music blasts out of the bars, filling the air with the feeling of a normal Summers day, here in Wanaka. Disco lights flashes around the room. The playground empty, like an empty dinner plate awaiting for food to be served. The ducklings tucked away with their mothers. All street lights are now turned off and no one is to be seen. Bartends in their cars skreetch to a stop, as they hoon home to get a good night sleep before the next busy day. A classic Summers night, in the busy life of Wanaka.

Hi Jemma.
A solid start. A few things to consider:
– Be careful and deliberate with your choice of language. Stick to one adjective rather than overloading. E.g., ‘The golden, radiant sun…’
– Think of your scene being revealed as a panning long shot of the lake front. How can you reveal the scene to readers as the ‘camera’ moves across the scene. You do this already in some places now try to be deliberate about it.
-Check your spelling and grammar by reading your writing back to yourself to see if it makes sense.
Cheerio
