wonder #3 (reading log)

Wonder is a truly inspiring book written by RJ Palacio. The book is written about a young boy named August, also known as Auggie. August has facial deformities and has had twenty seven surgeries throughout the 10 years of his life. Some big, and some small. This novel in such a life-changing story and will inspire many. The novel tells a story of how he gets judged only because of his facial deformities. August has a hard time making friends when he goes from getting homeschool to middle school, where he stands out from the rest of the crowd.

I think RJ Palacio is trying to teach us from the book about tolerance, understanding and respect and how majorly it can effect the way we act around other who many appear different than normal. The main concept brought across the novel is to not judge people on how they look, but what their personality is and how they treat people. Everyone has great potential no matter their outward appearance because that’s what doesn’t count. Auggie Pullman quotes – “I wish every day could be Halloween. We could all wear masks all the time. Then we could walk around and get to know each other before we got to see what we looked like under the masks.” This quote by Auggie shows that when people couldn’t see his face, they talked to him, even gave him a high-five. However, when he didnt have his mask on, they stood far away and kept their distance.

I believe another concept that RJ Palacio is trying to include into the novel is that you need perseverance to keep on doing the right thing. Even if you love someone, it can be tough to cheer them up when all they feel is worthless and down about themselves due to the fact that they feel different to others and not worth the same.

August was a smart, funny, intelligent young man. However, wrong assumptions got in the way of people seeing that in him. This put Auggie down and he wasn’t able to show people the smart, funny and kind person he was on the inside.

The most significant impact in the book Wonder that had on me was when August’s best friend, Daisy the dog died. Daisy was the only one who really understood August and didn’t judge him for his facial deformity. Daisy was always there to cheer August up when he didn’t want anyone to be near him.

This book has really taught me to shape my opinions about someone who has been through or had hard time living due to their different looks in a more positive way than before, which for me, would have been “what happened, that must have been terrible”. Too treating someone with more respect not knowing what hard time they had been through that they themselves could may not have helped.

The book Wonder written by RJ Palacio, has changed my perspective on not judging someone by their physical appearance but on the inside and what sort of a personality they have. “never judge a book by its cover”. This quote relates most highly to the book. I would highly recommend this book to everyone as in today’s world, people are very judgy. Reading the book would change perspective and opinions from different people.
